Why we do what we do!

The League of Ohio Sportsmen is both led by and driven by volunteers from throughout the state. Our volunteers are men, women, anglers, hunters, trappers, boaters, campers, hikers, divers, conservationists, environmentalists, birdwatchers, and more. They all genuinely love the outdoors and believe in passing our outdoors and sporting heritage to future generations.

Our volunteers team together to work on big and small projects all over the state. The opportunities abound and there is a job for everyone. Some of the things our volunteers do are: speak to small and large groups, teach youth and adults, testify before state boards and state and national legislators. But it’s not just about talking to people. Other volunteers get their hands dirty by helping to plant wildlife habitats, cleaning up streams, rivers and Lake Erie, helping weigh in big fish at our annual catfish tournament, cooking and serving meals at events, or just mowing the grass or cleaning up at the League’s office. And for people looking for more inside activities, there are opportunities to work on mailings, create handouts and flyers, write articles for newsletters and the website, and most all office-clerical tasks.

There is an amazing amount of work performed on behalf of the League every year by our volunteers. We would not be able to be the voice of sports-people and outdoors enthusiasts without the thousands of volunteer hours generously donated every year.

The League also benefits in a more prominent way because of our volunteers: legislators on every level of government listen to League representatives and give more weight to our testimony and requests because we ARE volunteers who are taking time away from our livelihoods to attend meetings and speak out.

The League can also boast that more of every membership dollar and donation goes to programs than any other comparable organization in Ohio. Because of our volunteer base, the League has only one paid staffer,  our part-time executive director.

We have a great base of volunteers now, but we need your help too!

There are two easy ways to get involved quickly:

          - Join the League of Ohio Sportsmen as an individual or life member

            (choose the "Individual Membership" option)

- Send an email with your name, address, phone number, and what
kind of volunteer opportunity you’d like to participate in.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!

For the past 101 (nearly 102) years, the League has represented the interests of Sportsmen and women throughout the state in making sound conservation and wildlife management decisions in both the state legislature and in congress.

The League is more than just working with government.  Through our education arm, the Ohio Wildlife Federation (a 501(c)3 organization), the League sponsors youth outdoor skills programs, camps and scholarships.  Together, the League and OWF offer a complete package of conservation education programs for all ages, along with solid representation of our member clubs and their members, and our membership, to both the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and the Ohio Division of Wildlife.  We regularly partner with ODNR and the Division of Wildlife to help spread the “wise use” message that is our conservation and sporting heritage.

But what’s in it for you and your club?

With your $50.00 annual club membership fee, your club becomes a club member of both the League and OWF.  Your members are associate members of the League and OWF at no charge to them.  We encourage and ask all of our clubs to suggest that their members become full individual members in the League and OWF for only $25.00 per year.

In addition, your club will appoint a Club Director.  This director will sit on our Board of Directors and OWF’s Board of Trustees with full voting privileges.  Your club and your members will have a voice in the League’s policy and issues.  At our annual convention, held at the end of February each year, you will have — in addition to your director — two delegates and two alternate delegates.

We encourage you to have your director attend our board meetings.  We typically meet for about three hours on the third Saturday of the month.  This is your opportunity to bring local issues to us so that together we can work for the betterment of both of our organizations.

If you have any questions, please call our office at any time at (614) 224-8970.

To get started, please fill out the Club Membership Application form completely and mail it along with a check for $50.00 to our office.

We look forward to working with your club!
